First Kumbaya moment. Lhota and de Blasio agree that "lack of planning" during superstorm Sandy made situation worse.
Lhota did hit de Blasio, citing "promises you can't keep." Q poll today said likely voters question whether de Blasio can keep his campaign promises
Joe Lhota says the mayor's proposal regarding resiliency needs to be implemented.
Bill de Blasio says his focus is on every day New Yorkers who haven't gotten the support they need from city hall.
WSJ's Michael Saul Howard notes that people in Staten Island, the Bronx and parts of Queens asking: "Where ya been?" Asks if he'll focus on areas other than Bklyn and Manhattan. de Blasio assures he will. Lhota says he'll hold monthly town hall meetings throughout the city.
Joe Lhota says he wants to have town hall meetings once a month and answer all the questions that the public wants to hear.
Next question: What will New York City look like in two years if your opponent wins?
Bill's proposals will result in "increase in crime," higher taxes and spending. " The streets will be unsafe and our "schools still be failing". de Blasio says "we'll get safer. If Lhota wins, de Blasio says, problems will remain the same with policing and affordable housing. Lhota will cont. a lot of the "failed policies of Mayor Bloomberg."
If you're tuning in to tonight's debate, tweet questions to the candidates using the hashtag #NYC2013 -- questions will be added to a 30-minute bonus round.
New question: How will you keep New York City crime levels at record lows?
Bill de Blasio: "We have 34,000 plus of the best police officers on earth. I want to keep that number stable."
Joe Lhota: Go to the source of where the problem is. We need to continue making sure that illegal guns are taken off the street. We're seeing an increase in violence in New York.
Next topic: Stop and frisk
We need to get control of Stop, Question and Frisk, but it is a tool to control crime: Lhota
Bill de Blasio: 90 percent of people who are stopped are innocent.
de Blasio: 90% of those stopped have done nothing wrong. Lhota: No room for racial profiling in the city... we are running laps here.
Racially profiled shoppers: Lhota: There is no room for racial profiling in NYC stores. "Shopping while black" should not lead to arrests. Racial profiling should end in all situations.
De Blasio. "We have some common ground here."
That's not allowable in the city of NY in the year 2013... that has to stop right away.
New question: Which New Yorkers will see their taxes go down?
Lhota: property taxes will go down. Some corporate taxes will go down. Make govt more efficient.
de Blasio: That's trickle down economics. Classic Republican plan. Not cont. to give tax plans to wealthy and corporations. We should tax those making $500,000 or more over the next 5 years.
Moderator to de Blasio: Yes or no -- do you have a Plan B if Albany rejects this tax proposal?
de Blasio continues to balk at offering a so called Plan B if Gov. Cuomo nixes tax hike on rich to fund universal preK and middle school after school programs. Lhota: "Real leaders not only have a Plan B or a Plan C...ultimate sign of leadership."
Bill de Blasio: "Leaders create a vision, get the people to buy into the vision and then achieve the vision."
